Wonderful allround performance by captain Ranjib Biswal enabled host Orissa trounce Assam by an innings and 93 runs on the penultimate day of their four-day East Zone match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. Biswal hit an unbeaten half-century and followed it with a match haul of nine wickets for 102 runs.
This was the 26th overall win, 15th by innings margin in 140 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa. Against Assam, this was Orissa’s 15th win, sixth by innings in 40 matches so far. Attractive batting by the top order enabled Orissa amass a formidable total of 411 after Biswal won the toss and opted to bat.
Prasanta Mohapatra (72), Shiv Sundar Das (74), Sanjay Raul (60) and captain Biswal (69 not out) scored the four fifties, while Rashmi Ranjan Parida (49) and Bishnudev Mohanty (30) made notable contributions for the home team. Biswal passed 2000 runs in first-class cricket when he reached 16.
In reply, Assam were bowled out for 112 in the first innings and 206 in the second after they were forced to follow on, conceding a first-innings lead of 299 runs. Sushil Kumar Prasad was the scond most successful Orissa bowler, bagging five wickets in the first innings and two in the second.
